Peter Teeuwen Memorial Ride Review

Brisk temperatures but bright, sunny skies greeted more than 150 bicyclists who took part in the 11th Peter Teeuwen Memorial Bike Ride in Chesapeake, VA on Sunday, January 12th. The event marked the 10th anniversary of the sudden death of the prolific race promoter, whose legacy was celebrated with a police escorted 23 mile "parade" ride on the route Teeuwen rode daily. The ride was followed up by a pot-luck social and informal awards presentation. The recipient of the Peter Teeuwen Achievement In Cycling Award for 2002 went to Bill Collins of Virginia Beach Velo for having demonstrated his dominance last season in winning both the Category 1,2 and the 30+ Best All-around Rider AND the Cat 1,2 State Omnium! Although unable to attend the event, Collins was acknowledged with rousing applause. Also recognized, was the 2002 Team BAR Award which for the fourth consecutive year went to James River Velo Sport.

Special thanks go to the Chesapeake Police for providing the superb rolling enclosure and the Tidewater Bicycle Association Egrets (Tandem group) for helping with kitchen duty and clean up!
