BAR Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I thought I'd put together a few of the more commonly asked questions here in a small document.

  1. I was the second 50+ to cross the line in a 40+/50+ race but got no points. Why?
  2. With two races run together, how are points scored?
  3. I was the first D42 rider across the line. Why didn't I get points for first place?
  4. Why did I get points for 4th in the last time trial when I finished 2nd?
  5. I got no points for a race. Why?
  6. How are those team points awarded?
  7. My question isn't here. What's next?

  1. I was the second 50+ to cross the line in a 40+/50+ race but got no points. Why?

Of course, this also applies to other races that have different USCF categories but are run at the same time, for example Cat 3/4.

You must look at the flyer to determine the actual listing of the race. Some races will be listed as 40+/50+ and have two separate payouts. This type of race is two separate races run concurrently. A race listed as:

    Men 40+/50+ 47.5 miles 3/3 $135/$135 12:05pm $18

is two races run concurrently. For this type of race, the BAR points will be broken into 40+ and 50+.

However, if the race is listed with only one payout, then it essentially is only one race. It might be listed as 40+/50+, but with one payout it's really just a 40+ race. So points will be given to the top 15 riders regardless of age (or category) and the points will be placed into the appropriate category.

  2. With two races run together, how are points scored?

According to the BAR rules, points are given to the top 15 riders regardless of category or age. Points are then placed in the riders appropriate age or category. So if there is a Mens Cat 3/4 race, then the top 15 riders would score points and a Cat 3 rider would get his points in the Cat 3 BAR and a Cat 4 rider would get his points in the Cat 4 BAR.

There are two exceptions to this rule. The first is for time trials. Since I can massage the results into the proper categories, riders will be split into separate categories and points awarded in each category. The second exception is if the race is actually two races run concurrently. This would basically mean two separate payouts.

  3. I was the first D42 rider across the line. Why didn't I get points for first place?

Remember, the BAR is open to anyone regardless of team or where they reside. So if you finished 10th, you get points for 10th.

  4. Why did I get points for 4th in the last time trial when I finished 2nd?

For a Time Trial (and only for a Time Trial) the posted results will be massaged to fit the BAR categories exactly. For example, the state TT gives medals are results for 5 year increments. So a rider that finished 2nd in the 35-39 age category might not receive 2nd in the 30+ BAR category. The times will be taken a arranged so that results match the BAR category, then points are given from there.

  5. I got no points for a race. Why?

One of the most common reasons for not getting any BAR points is your name isn't on the results. Check here for the results of the race. If your name isn't on the results, then obviously you "officially" didn't place. By the time I post results on the website, they have been "official" for days. You should have checked the results on race day.

If you did show up on the results, then a possibility is that you're new to racing or new to the area and I know nothing about you. This is especially true if you did a race than spans multiple categories, for example 40+/50+. If you suspect this, send me your name, hometown and racing category or age and I'll get your points to you ASAP.

If your name is there and you still don't have points, send me an email.

  6. How are those team points awarded?

The computation of team points is not easy to explain so let's just look at an example.

Your team "Team XYZ" finished first, fourth, eleventh and thirteenth in a race. So your team scored:

The top three riders are taken and the average of their points is computed. So 30+20+5 = 55 points. Divide by three and the team points for Team XYZ is 18.33 points for this race.

  7. My question isn't here. What's next?

Send me an email with your question and I'll answer it. Then you might even see your question here :-).
