The Virginia State Road Race Championships for Senior Divisions was held on a 10.7 mile circuit of mainly flat rural roads in Surry County, VA under overcast skies (but no actual threat of rain) on the already rain-soaked surrounding bottomlands. Standing water in some spots on the course was little more than a nuisance but caused no real problems for the 135 riders and 100+ supporters. The two 180-degree turns and narrow roads lent an element of technicality to the otherwise "unchallenging" course while the two big-ring hills offered the opportunity for breakaway attempts and King (Queen) of the Mountain bonus points. The course was well-monitored by volunteers and officials, and the pelotons were each protected by a rolling enclosure on a virtually "one-way traffic only" roadway, superbly enforced by the Surry County Sheriff's Department and Virginia State Police. Despite the low volume of participants in some categories (due in large part to a conflict with the Tour d'Toona) all races showed a very high level of competitiveness resulting in some surprising finishes. Never let it be said that a race cannot be a race unless it is hilly. We in Southeastern know this to be true, and we are quite proud to have provided a quality event to showcase our state's best cyclists. Congratulations to all the medal recipients.
