After suffering through rain for the past decade, the weather was absolutely perfect for Roanoke's Festival in the Park over Memorial Day weekend this year. This made for a great weekend of bicycle racing. The hill climb the first day looked like a shoo-in for Saturn's Mike Barry, but local favorite Scottie Weiss (GoMart, WV tourism) upset him by mere seconds.

The 110-mile road race featuring two different climbs of Catawba with the first time up only 5 miles into the race. With KOM money on the line, there were several surges at the front -the pack strung out and people spit out the back before it was over. Mike Barry (Saturn) took the KOM with Scottie Weiss (GoMart, WV Tourism) 2nd and 15 yr.-old Polish wonder kid Peter Mazur (Kissena) 3rd.The break formed at that point with Barry, Weiss, Mazur and Tennessee rider Geri Mewett staying away the rest of the race. There were several abortive attempts to chase with all the escapees finding the reverse gear by the second climb over the mountain. A group of 4 jumped out of the pack including Kent Bostick (Shaklee), Jeff Braumberger (GoMart), Corey Fisher (Cycle Center) and Luke Stockwell (Regulators'"ringer" Australian pro mountain biker). Ben Barnard (AVMetro) made a successful jump towards this group and was joined by Roger Friend (MVC/PowerBar). These two bridged to the chase group. Friend and Bostick worked hard to close down the gap to the leaders but never got closer than 4 minutes. Their efforts were too much for Braumberger who went back to the pack. The break meanwhile split with Barry and Mazur dropping Weiss and Mewett. Mazur clipped out of his pedal in the sprint, giving the win to Barry. Weiss came behind with Mewett in 4th. Friend attacked the chase group on the last hill with only Bostick able to hang. Friend came 5th with Bostick 6th. Fisher, Stockwell and Barnard remained clear of the field to finish 7-9. The field had dwindled to 13riders at this point of the grueling race. A few riders managed to escape leaving Saturn's Swindlehurst to take the field sprint.

The Saturn Festival Cup Crit started fast and furious with 30+ Crit national champion Jake Helmboldt (HDK) going on an early flyer. Helmboldt nabbed the first 2 $100 primes before the field chased him down. There were numerous attacks and counters as the $100 primes kept things rolling. The prime sprints were always hotly contested with Marcel Bengston (Regulators), Ed Shepherd (HDK), and Jacob Hacker (MVC/PowerBar) pocketing some of the bucks. George Menard (Bicycle Therapy) got away just a bit too soon with 5 laps to go. Although he picked up some of the back to back $100 primes, he was chased down and GoMart's Zack Baker launched himself to stay away the final 2 laps for one more prime and the win.

Saturn's Mike Barry won the $500 omnium for the men. Julie Hanson (Saturn) dominated the women's events, winning all three races and taking home the omnium prize.
