Jefferson Cup II
Charlottesville VA
3/22/98

The weather was a big improvement over the first Jefferson Cup and the attendance reflected that! The Canadians with Czeslaw Lukaszewicz were having their spring training camp just over the mountains and came to the race giving us an international field (how do you say - it's a bit chilly in french ;-) Czeslaw won the race last year and made it two in a row this year. It took four attacks before he finally got the winning break consisting of Lukaszewicz, Wirsing (Snow Valley), DeCanio (visiting from Italy for visa purposes) and Muoio (MVC/PowerBar). The break only had about 30 seconds with Roger Friend (MVC/PowerBar) putting in a major blocking effort against some earnest chasing from the NCVC team as well as DC Velo and even some of the other Canadians-particularly the Saeco team (apparently they weren't working for Czeslaw). The break did stay away, Chris Kent jumped hard at 800 meters to take the next place in the field and Zach Browne (NCVC) beat out Roger at the line for 6th. The rest of the races ended in field sprints.
