Thanks to all who came out on a beautiful sunny Sunday for the first road race of the season. We had great fields of 75 in the Pro,1,2,3 and 103 in the 4,5 race. (Please feel free to fill in the gaps of this story and the gaps in the results. Thanks!)

The Pro,1,2,3 race got off to a quick start with an early breakaway by mile 4 of the 47 mile race. James Wagner of BBC/Gold's Gym and Chandler Spears (NuGrape) plus another rider (who was it?) broke clear of the field as the race rolled at 30+ mph on the closed(!) divided highway for 9 miles. After the first intersection through the traffic circle at Gordonsville there were some concerted chase efforts with Roger Friend (MVC/PowerBar) eventually trying to bridge to the break solo. The pack finally swallowed Friend after crossing route 20 and shortly thereafter caught the breakaway. Several fits and starts tried to get away but nothing succeeded until the hill before the route 15 intersection where one rider rolled off the front (who was that 4th person in the break?) with Friend on his wheel. Shortly thereafter, Andrew Inglis(UVa Cycling Team) and John Heath (HDK) blasted up to and past the front pair. The four joined up and had a 30 second gap by the last turn at Rapidan 5 miles from the finish. The break struggled to maintain their gap and finally split apart with Friend coming in for the win with Heath on his wheel for 2nd. The front of the pack surged past the remaining two with Zach Browne winning the field sprint and Chris Schmidt taking 4th.

The 4,5 race saw no successful breakaways with no one able to get more than 20 feet off the front before being chased down. Judd VanSickle (Va. Tech) won the field sprint.
